England secured a decisive 241-run victory over West Indies in the second Test at Trent Bridge, thanks to standout performances from Joe Root, Harry Brook, and Shoaib Bashir. England, having posted scores of 416 and 425, set West Indies a daunting target of 385. West Indies fell to 457 and 143, with Bashir’s five-wicket haul securing the victory.
Root and Brook each scored centuries, with Root making 122 and Brook 109, leading England to a total of 425 in their second innings. This marked the first time in England’s history that they scored 400 in both innings of a Test match. Root’s century also moved him up to eighth on the all-time Test run-scorers’ list.
Shoaib Bashir, at just 20 years old, made history as the youngest England bowler to take a five-wicket haul in a home Test. Consequently, his 5 for 41 dismantled the West Indies batting lineup in the final innings. Notably, his performance included crucial wickets of key batsmen like Alick Athanaze and Kavem Hodge.
West Indies struggled in their chase, collapsing from 61 without loss to 143 all out. Chris Woakes also played a pivotal role, taking three key wickets and supporting Bashir’s efforts. Despite a bright start by Brathwaite and Louis, West Indies faltered as England’s bowlers, including Mark Wood, overwhelmed them.
Earlier in the match, England had built a strong position with solid contributions from Ollie Pope and Ben Duckett, who added crucial runs before being dismissed. West Indies’ resistance crumbled under the pressure, and England wrapped up the game within four days to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the series for the Richards-Botham Trophy.
