Amid Pakistan’s disappointing performance at the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup, rumors surfaced regarding a potential rift between captain Babar Azam and star bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi. Speculation heightened after Pakistan’s defeat to India on June 9, with former cricketer Wasim Akram suggesting a lack of communication between the two players.

Pakistan’s assistant coach Azhar Mahmood quickly dismissed rumors, confirming Babar and Shaheen’s strong friendship on and off-field. Mahmood emphasized their camaraderie, countering any suggestions of discord between the players. Mahmood dismissed Akram’s remarks, stating, “Shaheen and Babar are talking, they are good friends. They are both part of the Pakistan team.”
Azhar Mahmood also emphasized that the team management takes collective responsibility for Pakistan’s poor showing in the tournament rather than singling out individual players. He clarified that all players are actively involved and not sidelined as suggested.
“We are not hiding any players, everyone is there. Everything is there. We’re a team, and we all take responsibility. We haven’t performed well, and that’s on us,” Azhar Mahmood asserted.
Facing a crucial match against Canada on June 11 to remain in World Cup contention, Pakistan must prioritize cricket. Azhar Mahmood emphasized the need to maintain focus and handle distractions effectively for a successful performance. Maintaining composure and executing their game plan will be crucial for Pakistan’s chances in the upcoming match.
