Glenn Maxwell’s hopes of returning to first-class cricket before Australia’s tour of Sri Lanka have suffered a blow due to a hamstring injury he sustained against Pakistan in Hobart. The grade two hamstring strain is expected to sideline Maxwell for up to a month, preventing him from playing in Victoria’s next two Sheffield Shield matches. This leaves him with a tight window to recover in time for the Big Bash League (BBL) season opener with the Melbourne Stars on December 15.

Glenn Maxwell, who had hoped to use the Shield matches as a platform to prove his readiness for Test cricket after recovering from a serious leg injury in 2022, will miss these opportunities. Despite this setback, his Test aspirations remain intact. Maxwell recently returned to red-ball cricket, playing for Victoria’s Second XI against Queensland, and felt encouraged by his fielding efforts.
Glenn Maxwell’s desire to add to his seven Test caps is a key goal as he eyes a spot in the squad for the upcoming Sri Lanka tour. However, former Australia captain Aaron Finch believes Maxwell’s selection for Sri Lanka will not depend on his performance in Shield cricket. Finch pointed out that Maxwell’s skill set, particularly his ability to handle spin, makes him a valuable option for Australia’s Test side, regardless of his recent red-ball form.
Head coach Andrew McDonald echoed these sentiments, stating that Maxwell’s versatility in spin-heavy conditions makes him a strong candidate for the Sri Lanka tour. The challenge for Maxwell remains his fitness, with selectors set to monitor his recovery as they make their final decisions.
