Australia secured a comfortable victory in the opening T20 of their series against South Africa, led by captain Alyssa Healy’s stellar batting performance. Healy, who overcame illness concerns to play, scored a match-winning 46 runs off 28-balls, setting stage for Australia’s successful chase.
South Africa posted a total of 147-6, with opener Tazmin Brits contributing a tidy half-century. However, Australia’s dominant batting display, fueled by Healy and later Beth Mooney’s unbeaten 72, ensured an emphatic win with eight wickets in hand and five balls to spare.
Healy’s aggressive innings, marked by two sixes and six fours, included impressive shots like an audacious flick over mid-wicket for four and a massive six straight back over the bowler’s head. Mooney’s masterful strokes and a partnership between the top-ranked ICC batters further solidified Australia’s victory.
The Proteas’ batting struggled early, but Brits and Sune Luus (19) provided some resistance. Darcie Brown’s 2-20 and Ellyse Perry’s 2-13 helped restrict South Africa’s scoring.
The multi-format series will continue with two more T20s, three ODIs, and a Test match in the coming weeks. Canberra hosts the second T20 on Sunday, followed by the series moving to Hobart on Tuesday.
