Afghanistan secured a dominant 94-run victory over Hong Kong in Abu Dhabi, powered by Azmatullah Omarzai’s explosive hitting and Sediqullah Atal’s composed knock. Batting first in searing 41°C heat, Afghanistan posted 188 for 6, thanks to Omarzai’s blistering 53 off 21 balls and Atal’s unbeaten 73 from 52 deliveries. The pair highlighted the gulf in class between a Full Member side and their Associate opposition.

Atal shows maturity
Atal, just 24, displayed maturity beyond his years. He adapted well to the slower surface, using both front and back foot effectively. Hong Kong had multiple chances to dismiss him, with Yasim Murtaza dropping him twice and Ehsan Khan spilling another opportunity after Atal crossed fifty. From nearly falling in the first over, he went on to anchor the innings and record his third T20I half-century.
Omarzai changes the game
Omarzai, however, was the game-changer. With Afghanistan 119 for 4 after 16 overs, Hong Kong’s spinners had briefly pulled things back, conceding just 24 runs in a five-over spell. But once the seamers returned, Omarzai exploded. He smashed three sixes and a four off Ayush Shukla to bring up Afghanistan’s fastest T20I fifty in only 20 balls. His late assault ensured Afghanistan added 60 runs in the final three overs, taking the game out of Hong Kong’s reach.
Hong Kong collapse
In reply, Hong Kong faltered badly. Poor decision-making and lapses in communication cost them dearly. Anshuman Rath was given out caught behind despite replays showing no contact, but he chose not to review. Moments later, Rashid Khan ran out captain Nizakat Khan for a duck. Fielding errors continued, with more dropped catches and a casual run-out gifted to Omarzai.
One-sided finish
The chase quickly unraveled as Hong Kong slumped to 63 for 6. Only Babar Hayat (39) offered resistance, but with no support, Hong Kong crawled to 94 for 9. They lost four wickets inside the powerplay, equalling the joint-second most in Asia Cup history. In the end, Afghanistan’s all-round dominance sealed a one-sided contest.
