Alice Capsey’s omission from England’s T20I squad for the upcoming tour of South Africa comes as a consequence of her lackluster performance during the T20 World Cup last month. Capsey, who made her England debut at 17 in 2022, has earned a reputation as one of the brightest young talents in women’s cricket. However, after struggling with form, she managed just 19 runs in three World Cup innings and has since added only 27 runs in five matches for the Melbourne Renegades in the Women’s Big Bash League.
Meanwhile, allrounder Paige Scholfield, who made her debut for England in September against Ireland, earns a spot in the T20I squad for the South Africa tour. Fast bowler Lauren Filer, who was left out of the World Cup squad due to the perceived conditions, is also included in all three squads for the multi-format tour. Dani Gibson, however, misses out after undergoing knee surgery following an injury sustained during the World Cup.
The tour will include England’s first Women’s Test in South Africa since 2002, with potential debutants Freya Kemp and Maia Bouchier expected to make an appearance. Heather Knight, who returns to action after an injury sidelined her during the World Cup, will continue as captain across all formats.
The South Africa tour holds significant importance for England, as it offers a chance to reset following their early World Cup exit. With a key focus on preparing for the Women’s Ashes in January, England must deliver strong performances in South Africa. The squad will depart for the T20I leg on November 16, with the ODI and Test squads following on November 27.
