Afghanistan Names Uncapped Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Khalil Gurbaz in Squad for One-Off Test against Ireland

Afghanistan has announced its squad for the upcoming one-off Test against Ireland, scheduled to commence on February 28 in Abu Dhabi. Notably, uncapped players Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Khalil Gurbaz have earned spots in the 16-member Test squad.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz, a wicketkeeper-batter, stands poised for a potential Test debut, while leg-spinner Khalil Gurbaz, despite featuring in only ten first-class matches, has secured his place in the squad. Khalil boasts 40 wickets in those ten games at an average of 28.52, with an economy rate of 3.72. Fast bowler Mohammad Ibrahim, another uncapped player, has been recalled after being part of the squad for the Bangladesh tour in June last year.

Yamin Ahmadzai and Mohammad Salim, who were part of Afghanistan’s recent squad against Sri Lanka, have been omitted due to injuries. However, Bahir Shah, with a stellar first-class average of 60.90 after 40 matches, including a solitary Test, has been included.

ACB’s interim chief selector, Ahmad Shah Sulimankhil, highlighted the team’s rigorous preparation, mentioning a 10-day conditioning camp in Abu Dhabi involving 22 players and support staff. He expressed confidence in the squad’s selection, particularly praising the newcomers who showcased impressive performances in recent domestic events.

Notable omissions from the squad include reserve wicketkeeper Mohammad Ishaq and wristspinner Qais Ahmad, who struggled in the recent Test against Sri Lanka.

This match marks Afghanistan’s second Test encounter against Ireland, following their victory in March 2019. Additionally, Afghanistan is slated to play five more Tests this year, including matches against Bangladesh, New Zealand (for the first time), and Zimbabwe.
