Virat Kohli, India’s key batsman, has been struggling in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, managing only 5 runs in three matches. Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra believes Kohli will regain form during India’s Super 8 clash against Afghanistan on June 20 in Barbados.
Reflecting on Kohli’s performance so far, Chopra remarked, “I expect Virat Kohli to find his form against Afghanistan, not just because of the opponent but due to his caliber and recent form coming into this World Cup. The conditions in Barbados should suit him well, with good bounce and smaller boundaries. Kohli’s approach has been overly aggressive, which hasn’t paid off. In the last match against Afghanistan, he attempted a six off the first ball and was dismissed. He needs to give himself more time, especially with Afghanistan’s in-form bowlers like Fazalhaq Farooqi and Naveen-ul-Haq, supported by a strong spin attack.”
Chopra also discussed the challenges posed by pitches in the West Indies, contrasting them with the low-scoring games seen in New York. “The New York pitch was tough for T20 cricket, favoring bowlers over batsmen. In the West Indies, each venue presents a unique challenge: Tarouba has low bounce, Guyana offers turning tracks, and Barbados has a good batting surface. Overall, high-scoring matches will be rare,” he observed.
Regarding the crucial toss between India and Afghanistan, Chopra suggested, “Winning the toss and batting first could be advantageous, as history shows success with this strategy in Barbados. Afghanistan struggles when chasing targets but excels in defending them, especially with their spinners. Despite Rashid Khan’s IPL season and other bowlers’ underperformance, I’m confident India will perform well and achieve a positive outcome.”
