WNBA Expansion: Current Teams and Future Growth Plans in Women’s Basketball

The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) is experiencing significant growth in both popularity and size, driven by standout performances such as Caitlin Clark’s rise, the Las Vegas Aces’ pursuit of a championship three-peat, and the U.S. women’s basketball team’s eighth consecutive Olympic gold medal. As the league capitalizes on this burgeoning interest, plans for expansion are underway.

Current WNBA Structure

As of now, the WNBA comprises 12 teams divided into two conferences:

Eastern Conference:

  • Atlanta Dream
  • Connecticut Sun
  • Chicago Sky
  • Indiana Fever
  • New York Liberty
  • Washington Mystics

Western Conference:

  • Dallas Wings
  • Los Angeles Sparks
  • Las Vegas Aces
  • Minnesota Lynx
  • Phoenix Mercury
  • Seattle Storm

Upcoming Expansion Plans

The WNBA is set to expand to 15 teams by 2026 with the addition of three new franchises:

  • Golden State Valkyries: Joining in 2025, this will be the league’s 13th team. It will mark the first new team addition since the Atlanta Dream entered in 2008.
  • Toronto Team: Set to debut in 2026, this will be the WNBA’s first international franchise.
  • Portland Team: Also joining in 2026, this team will revive the city’s basketball presence more than two decades after the Portland Fire folded.

Future Expansion

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has indicated that the league is on track to introduce a 16th team by 2027 or 2028.

Original WNBA Franchises

Despite the league’s expansion, four teams have been with the WNBA since its inception in 1997:

  • New York Liberty
  • Los Angeles Sparks
  • Phoenix Mercury

Additionally, the Las Vegas Aces have historical roots as well. Originally established as the Utah Starzz in 1997, the franchise became the San Antonio Silver Stars in 2003 and then the San Antonio Stars until its move to Las Vegas in 2017, where it was rebranded as the Aces.

As the WNBA continues to grow, these expansions reflect the league’s commitment to broadening its reach and enhancing its presence in the sports world.
