Tyrone Curtis “Muggsy” Bogues stands as a living testament to overcoming adversity and inspiring future generations in the world of basketball. At just 1.60 meters tall, Bogues is the shortest player in NBA history, but his impact on the game is nothing short of monumental.
The former NBA star enjoyed a remarkable 14-year career with the Washington Bullets, Charlotte Hornets, Golden State Warriors, and Toronto Raptors. This October, basketball enthusiasts in the UAE will have the chance to witness Bogues’ enduring influence firsthand during the NBA Abu Dhabi Games 2024, presented by ADQ.
Bogues will be in Abu Dhabi for a series of high-profile pre-season games featuring the Boston Celtics and Denver Nuggets, two of the NBA’s elite teams, competing twice in three days. Speaking with Arab News ahead of the event, the 59-year-old shared his excitement about representing the NBA and his mission to inspire young athletes.
“I’m thrilled to be part of this event,” Bogues said. “It’s not just about showcasing basketball; it’s about inspiring kids to dream big and pursue a career in the sport, no matter their background.”
For Bogues, the NBA Abu Dhabi Games represent more than just pre-season matchups. They are a chance to demonstrate basketball’s global appeal and ignite passion in regions where the sport may not yet be a primary focus.
“People love seeing the game played on the other side of the world,” he explained. “Social media helps amplify these stories, creating interest in places where basketball isn’t the dominant sport. When kids see these games, they start dreaming of playing basketball, even if it’s not the top sport in their country.”
Bogues has observed the NBA’s evolution into a truly global league: “The game has become incredibly international. During my time, there weren’t as many players from overseas, but now the NBA features talent from all around the world, each bringing their own unique style.”

The NBA’s growing diversity has enriched the game, blending the fundamentally sound techniques of European players with the athletic prowess traditionally seen in American players. This fusion, according to Bogues, has made the game even more exciting.
Reflecting on his own career, Bogues emphasizes that success is not determined by size: “No matter your height or where you come from, you can achieve greatness if you master the game and believe in yourself.”
Although the NBA Abu Dhabi Games are pre-season contests, Bogues underscores their importance for team preparation. “Pre-season games are crucial for teams to rebuild chemistry and unity after a long break. They help players get back into rhythm and can prevent injuries by gradually reintroducing them to game conditions.”
The matchups between the reigning NBA champions, the Denver Nuggets, and the Boston Celtics, who last won the title in 2008, promise to be intense. Bogues anticipates a display of high-level basketball: “There will be a lot of pride on the line. Both teams will want to make a strong impression, even though it’s pre-season. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them face off again in the Finals.”
Bogues expresses his gratitude for the opportunity to promote the game globally. “It’s an honor to help spread the game and show kids that anything is possible. They need to see that their dreams can become reality.”
The NBA Abu Dhabi Games, presented by ADQ, will take place at the Etihad Arena on Yas Island, with games scheduled for Friday, October 4, and Sunday, October 6. Fans will have the chance to meet Bogues at the NBA District from October 3 to 6 at Manarat Al-Saadiyat, featuring basketball activities, interactive experiences, and exclusive merchandise. Additionally, Bogues will join other NBA legends and players for NBA Fan Appreciation Day on October 5 at Etihad Arena.
