LeBron and Bronny James Make History as NBA’s First Father-Son Duo to Play Together

In a groundbreaking moment for basketball, LeBron James and his son Bronny James took the court together for the first time in NBA history on Tuesday night during the Los Angeles Lakers’ season opener. The historic pairing occurred late in the second quarter, with the Lakers leading 51-35 against their opponents.

LeBron James, at 39 years old, stands as the NBA’s all-time leading scorer and a four-time champion, while 20-year-old Bronny is a second-round draft pick who joined the Lakers last summer. Their appearance together marks a significant milestone, making them the first father-son duo to play simultaneously in the NBA.

Courtside to witness this momentous occasion were baseball legends Ken Griffey Sr. and Ken Griffey Jr., who made history in their own right as Major League Baseball’s first father-son duo to play together. The Griffeys played 51 games for the Seattle Mariners in 1990 and 1991 and shared a heartfelt moment with the James family during pregame warmups, capturing photos and exchanging warm words.

LeBron has long expressed his desire to play alongside Bronny, a dream he first articulated while Bronny was still in high school. That dream came to fruition quickly after Bronny declared for the NBA Draft following a single collegiate season, leading the Lakers to select him with the 55th overall pick.

With this achievement, the Jameses join an exclusive group of father-son pairs in professional sports who have competed together. The Griffeys not only made history but also famously hit home runs in the same game on September 14, 1990. Other notable pairs include Baseball Hall of Famer Tim Raines and his son, who played together with the Baltimore Orioles in 2001, as well as legendary hockey player Gordie Howe, who played alongside both of his sons, Mark and Marty, in the WHA and NHL during the late 1970s.

As the Lakers’ season unfolds, fans and sports enthusiasts alike will be keenly watching the evolution of this historic father-son duo, a testament to their legacy in the world of sports.
