Lithuania’s top basketball league, the LKL, has announced a groundbreaking partnership with sports data and technology company Genius Sports. This collaboration marks the first time a European basketball league has integrated Genius Sports’ advanced AI-powered computer vision technology.
Under this new agreement, the LKL will leverage Genius Sports’ solutions to enhance various aspects of the league. Including player performance analytics, optical player tracking, and comprehensive event data. Teams will benefit from a rich dataset of league statistics, high-definition live video production. And sophisticated coaching and analysis tools that are already in use by NBA teams.
The partnership will also see Genius Sports’ AI technology integrated into LKL broadcasts. This includes adding data overlays, visualizations, and interactive graphics, as well as creating new sponsorship opportunities within live game footage.
LKL Chief Executive Rasa Liumiene expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “This partnership will provide LKL clubs, their administration, and basketball coaches with state-of-the-art tools to improve performance analysis, enhance fan engagement, and generate new sponsorship avenues.”
Jonny Katanchian, Head of Sports and Broadcast at Genius Sports, highlighted the transformative potential of the technology: “Our solutions will revolutionize the LKL’s operations, unlocking the full potential of tracking data and video through advanced AI capabilities.”
This move aligns with Genius Sports’ broader strategy, as company is also FIBA’s official-data and video capture and production partner. Starting in 2025, Genius will serve as FIBA’s official innovation and technology services partner for a decade. The LKL’s adoption of Genius Sports’ technology sets a precedent for future integration across FIBA’s international basketball competitions.
Genius Sports has been a FIBA partner since 2004, providing over 200 leagues and national federations globally with FIBA LiveStats and FIBA Organizer solutions, which facilitate official play-by-play statistics and drive digital transformation in basketball. The partnership with the LKL further underscores Genius Sports’ commitment to advancing the sport through cutting-edge technology.
