California-born Brian Goorjian is stepping down as the head coach of the Australian men’s basketball team, marking the end of a significant era that spanned four Olympic Games and two separate terms leading the Boomers.
Basketball Australia announced on Wednesday that Goorjian will continue his coaching career with the Sydney Kings in the National Basketball League (NBL). His departure comes after an illustrious tenure that has profoundly shaped Australian basketball.
In his first stint as national coach from 2001 to 2008, Goorjian led the Boomers to remarkable achievements, including appearances at the 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Olympics, a World Cup in 2006 in Japan, and a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in the same year.
Goorjian returned to the national team in 2020, guiding the Boomers to their historic first Olympic medal—a bronze—at the Tokyo Games. Most recently, he coached the team at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where Australia fell in a hard-fought quarterfinal matchup against Serbia, ending their quest for another medal in overtime.
Andrew Gaze, a former Boomers player, NBL and NBA star, and Seton Hall standout, emphasized Goorjian’s far-reaching impact on Australian basketball. “Brian’s legacy extends to players who have represented Australia even when he wasn’t coaching the national team. His influence includes the development of the game as a player, coach, and advocate,” Gaze noted. “It’s crucial to acknowledge his contributions to the Australian basketball scene, but that’s only part of the complete story of Brian Goorjian and the significant impact he’s had on many lives.”
Luc Longley, another Australian basketball legend and former Boomers player who secured three consecutive NBA titles with the Chicago Bulls, praised Goorjian’s adaptability and ability to connect with players across generations. “He’s an American who learned to speak the Australian basketball language and navigated through several generations of change. Now, he’s the go-to guy who can communicate effectively with a new generation of young Aussies playing in the NBA.”
Goorjian’s departure from the national team marks a pivotal moment in Australian basketball, but his legacy and influence will continue to resonate within the sport. As he transitions to the Sydney Kings, fans and players alike will eagerly await what this accomplished coach will achieve in his new role.
