Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards did not hold back after his team’s disappointing 115-104 loss to the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday night, delivering a blunt assessment of his team’s performance and mindset.
Edwards expressed his frustration with the Timberwolves’ recent struggles, specifically calling out the team as “front-runners” following the defeat. While his comments were pointed, Edwards clarified that he wasn’t solely targeting his teammates. He took some of the blame for the loss as well, acknowledging his own role in the team’s inconsistent play.
In his remarks, Edwards explained that the Timberwolves tend to get overly confident when things are going well, and allow negative energy to take over when adversity strikes. “We let the emotions get the best of us,” Edwards said, adding that the team’s inability to stay composed was evident in their performance against the Kings.
Wednesday’s game was a back-and-forth affair. The Timberwolves entered halftime trailing 69-57 after the Suns outscored them 38-24 in the second quarter. Minnesota responded in the third, dominating the Kings 29-12 with a strong defensive effort. However, the Timberwolves faltered in the fourth quarter, allowing Sacramento to pull away with a 34-point surge to win by 11.
The loss is especially tough for Minnesota, which finished last season with a 56-26 record, earning the third seed in the Western Conference. The Timberwolves made a significant trade in the offseason, sending longtime franchise player Karl-Anthony Towns to the New York Knicks in exchange for Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo. Despite high expectations for the new-look roster, the Timberwolves have struggled to find their rhythm, now sitting at 8-10 on the season after a four-game losing streak. This recent slump has dropped them to 12th place in the Western Conference standings.
Edwards’ candid comments may serve as a wake-up call for the team as they look to turn things around. The Timberwolves will have another chance to bounce back when they host the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday.
