Punjab Kings (PBKS) kicked off IPL 2025 with a thrilling 11-run win over Gujarat Titans (GT) in Ahmedabad. Shreyas Iyer led the charge with a blistering 97* off 42 balls, helping PBKS post 243/5, their second-highest IPL total. In response, GT fell short despite strong performances from Sai Sudharsan (74 off 41) and Jos Buttler (54), finishing at 232/5.
Iyer Dominates with Career-Best Knock
Iyer showcased his intent by batting at No. 3, delivering an explosive performance. He smashed nine sixes, dominating GT’s bowlers, including Rashid Khan, whom he hit for two maximums. Iyer missed out on a century but prioritized team success over personal milestones. He recognized the need for a big score on a dewy night where chasing teams had won five of the last six games. His approach paid off, providing PBKS with a match-winning total.
Arya and Shashank Provide Support
Priyansh Arya, a promising left-hander backed by coach Ricky Ponting, impressed with a fluent 47. He dominated the powerplay, striking eight boundaries against a strong GT attack. Shashank Singh provided the late flourish, smashing 44* off 16 balls, including a brutal assault on Mohammed Siraj in the final over, which yielded 23 runs.
Sudharsan’s Consistency Continues
Sudharsan, who had smashed a century in last season’s final, continued his rich vein of form with a composed 74. He led GT’s middle-order surge, helping them score 87 runs between the 9th and 14th overs. Buttler, playing for his new franchise, also chipped in with a solid 54.
Vyshak’s Game-Changing Impact
Vijaykumar Vyshak, introduced as an impact substitute, delivered two critical overs (15th and 17th), conceding just 10 runs. Despite the dew, he nailed his yorkers consistently, restricting GT’s momentum. While PBKS scored 77 in their last five overs, GT managed only 50, ultimately falling short.
