Kim Little and Lia Wälti: Arsenal’s Midfield Generals Ready for Chelsea Battle

Arsenal’s Kim Little and Lia Wälti are no strangers to the intense rivalry with Chelsea, and they know Sunday’s Women’s Super League clash at Stamford Bridge could define their season. Sitting seven points behind the reigning champions, Arsenal need a win to close the gap to four points. A loss, however, would leave them staring at a daunting 10-point deficit.

“For us, games against Chelsea are always physical and fiercely competitive,” said Little. “When we dominate the midfield, we win. It’s as simple as that.” Wälti echoed her sentiments: “These matches are decided in the middle of the park. We hate losing to Chelsea, and it feels better than most victories when we beat them.”

Chelsea’s five consecutive league titles have been a source of frustration for Arsenal. “It’s been annoying,” admitted Wälti. “They’ve set the standard, but we’re determined to change the narrative.” The October defeat to Chelsea led to Jonas Eidevall’s resignation as Arsenal’s head coach. Renée Slegers stepped up, and since then, the team has been a revelation, winning 12 of their last 13 games and scoring 40 goals.

“Renée brought a different energy—calm and measured,” said Little. “That shift has been important for us.” Wälti added, “Momentum is everything in football, and we’ve found ours again after a tough start to the season.”

As seasoned leaders, Little and Wälti have embraced dual roles, nurturing young talents like Victoria Pelova and Kyra Cooney-Cross while maintaining their own high standards. “Helping younger players adapt to the league is part of what we do,” said Wälti.

Sunday’s match is not just a battle for points but a statement of intent for Arsenal. “This isn’t just another game,” said Little. “It’s about showing that we can take on the best and come out on top.”
