Manchester City Legend Tony Book Passes Away at 90

Tony Book, one of Manchester City’s most iconic figures from their golden era of the late 1960s and early 1970s, has passed away at the age of 90. A true legend, Book achieved remarkable success as both a player and a manager, leaving an indelible mark on the club’s history.

Nicknamed the “Bricklayer from Bath” in homage to his humble beginnings as an apprentice bricklayer, Book began his football journey in non-league with Bath City, where he made an impressive 387 appearances and captained the team to its first Southern League title. His professional career began at the age of 29 with Plymouth Argyle, before joining Manchester City two years later.

As City’s captain from 1967, Book led the team to a string of historic victories, including the First Division title in 1968, the FA Cup in 1969, and the double triumph of the League Cup and European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1970. His leadership and skill were pivotal during this transformative period for the club.

In 1974, Book transitioned to management, guiding City to another League Cup victory in 1976. He remained in charge until 1979, further solidifying his legacy at Maine Road.

Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak paid tribute to Book’s immense contributions:

“For nearly 60 years, Tony helped to shape Manchester City, not just in what he contributed as a player, captain, and manager, but in the way he conducted himself. His hopes and ambitions for his club were matched only by his incredible humility regarding his own significant achievements.

“Tony’s devotion to his club meant he was still fulfilling club duties earlier this season. I will miss seeing him at our games enormously, and witnessing firsthand the regard in which he is held by every generation of the City family.”

Book’s contributions to Manchester City extended far beyond the pitch. He embodied the spirit of the club and served as an inspiration for generations of players and fans alike. As a mark of respect, flags at the Etihad Stadium and the City Football Academy are flying at half-mast.

Tony Book will forever be remembered as a cornerstone of Manchester City’s legacy and one of the most influential figures in the club’s history.
