King, Garth Shine as Australia Beat England to Extend Ashes Lead

Australia pulled off a dramatic 21-run victory against England in the second ODI of the Women’s Ashes at Junction Oval. Defending a modest 180, Alana King delivered a match-winning spell, taking 4 for 25, as Australia extended their lead in the multi-format series. Kim Garth supported her well, claiming 3 for 37, as England’s batting lineup collapsed in a chaotic run chase.

The turning point came when King bowled Danni Wyatt with a stunning leg-break reminiscent of her hero Shane Warne, leaving England’s middle order in tatters. England’s poor shot selection and misjudgments added to their downfall. Amy Jones remained unbeaten on 47 but failed to manage the strike effectively, leaving No. 11 Lauren Bell exposed. Bell was bowled first ball by Tahlia McGrath, ending England’s innings at 159.

Earlier, Australia’s batting also struggled, collapsing from 131 for 2 to 180 all out. Ellyse Perry top-scored with a vital 60, while Sophie Ecclestone and Alice Capsey led England’s bowling effort. Ecclestone took 4 for 35, and Capsey claimed a career-best 3 for 22. Perry, looking set for a big score, fell to Capsey after a series of dot balls.

Despite their collapse, Australia’s spinners dominated the match. King’s brilliance in front of the packed Shane Warne stand earned her a standing ovation. “Playing here, where I started my career, is special. Having the Shane Warne stand made it surreal,” King said.

England’s hopes briefly revived with a 36-run stand between Jones and Capsey, but consistent pressure from Australia’s bowlers triggered another collapse. The match ended in chaos as England lost wickets at crucial moments, with confusion over free hits and missed chances sealing their fate.
