England dominated New Zealand on day two at Basin Reserve, with standout performances from Gus Atkinson, Jacob Bethell, and Joe Root. England, who haven’t won a Test series in New Zealand since 2007-08, now find themselves in a commanding position with a lead of 533 runs.

Atkinson, leading the charge, took a remarkable hat-trick, becoming the first player to do so at Basin Reserve. His figures of 4-31, combined with Brydon Carse’s 4-46, helped bowl New Zealand out for just 125. England then piled on the runs, with Bethell scoring a career-best 96, just shy of a century. Bethell’s innings was aggressive, playing at a strike rate of over 5 runs per over, and alongside Ben Duckett, they built a strong partnership of 187 runs.
Though Bethell fell short of his century, Root continued his excellent form, reaching 50 in a Test for the 100th time. Harry Brook also added to the total with a solid 50, while Ben Stokes blasted a quick-fire half-century. By the end of the day, England was 378 for 5, with Root and Stokes still at the crease, hinting at a possible declaration soon.
New Zealand’s bowlers, struggling throughout the day, failed to bowl a maiden, and none of their remaining batters faced more than 16 balls. England’s bowlers, meanwhile, had made early inroads, with Atkinson’s hat-trick sealing the morning’s destruction of New Zealand’s lineup. With three days left, New Zealand faces the daunting task of chasing down a record fourth-innings target.
