South African fast bowler Gerald Coetzee, set to represent Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2025, has been ruled out of the second Test against Sri Lanka and the upcoming series against Pakistan due to a right groin injury. Coetzee first felt discomfort on Day 4 of the first Test against Sri Lanka, after bowling just three overs in the morning session. Although he briefly returned to dismiss Dinesh Chandimal, he was clearly struggling. Scans later confirmed a muscle strain in his right groin, which will require 4–6 weeks to heal.

Young pacer Kwena Maphaka, who made his international debut earlier this year, will replace Coetzee for the second Test starting December 5 at St George’s Park. Coetzee’s injury may also affect his participation in the upcoming SA20 League, where he is a key player for the Joburg Super Kings. His absence could see him miss their opening match against MI Cape Town on January 11.
South Africa is facing another injury setback, with all-rounder Wiaan Mulder sidelined due to a fractured finger. Despite these challenges, South Africa secured a dominant 233-run win in the first Test against Sri Lanka, improving their chances of reaching the World Test Championship (WTC) final. They currently sit second on the WTC points table, ahead of defending champions Australia.
Gujarat Titans picked Coetzee for ₹2.4 crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction after a bidding war with Punjab Kings. He impressed in his IPL debut season with Mumbai Indians, taking 13 wickets in 10 matches.
