Aleix Espargaro has shared his first thoughts on Honda’s RC213V after his debut ride on the bike during the post-season test at Barcelona. The three-time Grand Prix winner, who retired from full-time racing after the Solidarity Grand Prix, has taken on a new role as a test rider for Honda’s factory MotoGP team.
Espargaro’s first laps aboard the RC213V on Tuesday saw him finish 14th on the timesheets, ahead of full-time rider Joan Mir, signaling a strong start to his new role. Although Espargaro did not speak directly to the media, fellow riders and team members have shared insights into his initial feedback on the bike.
Luca Marini, who observed Espargaro’s performance, expressed his enthusiasm about the Spaniard’s first ride on the bike at one of his best tracks. Marini explained:
“It was fantastic that Aleix got to try the bike here in Barcelona. It’s a track where he’s been super-fast in the past, achieving great results with Aprilia. His feedback will be invaluable for the bike’s development, especially after his first impression on a track like this.”
Marini acknowledged that Espargaro’s early lap times were promising, but noted that he would need more time on the bike to fully adjust to its unique characteristics.
“He just needs a little more experience on the bike. It’s quite different from the other machines, but I’m sure he’ll find a way to help us improve it,” Marini added.
Honda teammate Joan Mir also shared his thoughts on Espargaro’s ride, noting that the veteran rider identified both the strengths and weaknesses of the RC213V, echoing common concerns among the team. Mir said:
“Aleix tried the standard bike, and from what I know, he didn’t test anything new. He was impressed by some aspects, especially the bike’s general handling and geometry, which he found okay. However, he did mention the same weaknesses we’ve all noticed—lack of torque, grip, and power. He was particularly struck by the bike’s lack of acceleration and top speed.”
Honda’s factory team boss, Alberto Puig, expressed his satisfaction with Espargaro’s performance during the test, particularly praising the rider’s clear and precise communication with the engineers. Puig said:
“We are really, really happy and pleasantly surprised. Aleix is fast, no doubt—he was a contender for the podium just a few days ago. But what really impressed us was his feedback to the engineers. He was very straight, precise, and clear in identifying both the strong points and the areas for improvement on the bike.”
Puig emphasized that Espargaro’s experience and speed made him an ideal addition to the team, and he is optimistic about the contributions the veteran rider will make to Honda’s development plans.
“We wanted someone with experience but also speed, and Aleix brings both. His input will be crucial, and we are looking forward to making a solid plan together.”
Espargaro’s transition into his new role as a test rider for Honda is off to a promising start, and his contributions are expected to play a key role in the team’s ongoing efforts to improve the RC213V for the upcoming MotoGP season.
