Bumrah on Replacing Rohit as Captain for Entire Border-Gavaskar Trophy: ‘Rohit Can’t Say Anything’

India will face Australia on November 22 at Optus Stadium for the opening match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, a vital series for both teams in the World Test Championship (WTC) context. However, India will be without regular captain Rohit Sharma for the first Test, as he is absent due to the birth of his second child.

In his absence, Jasprit Bumrah will captain the side for the opening game. Ahead of the match, Bumrah, along with Australian captain Pat Cummins, posed for a photoshoot and addressed the media. During the press conference, Bumrah discussed several key topics, including Mohammed Shami’s inclusion in the squad, the conditions at Perth, and India’s disappointing loss to New Zealand in the recent series.

When asked about the possibility of leading India for the entire Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Bumrah responded with humor, making it clear that he wouldn’t suggest taking over from Rohit permanently. “Obviously, I won’t tell Rohit that I should do it for the whole series because he is our captain and doing a wonderful job,” Bumrah said. “Right now, it’s one game, and I can’t control what happens in the future. I’m focused on doing my best in this moment.”

Bumrah expressed that he relishes the responsibility of captaincy but emphasized that his focus is on the present and giving his best for the team. “I’ve done it before, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. My job now is to contribute and perform to the best of my ability,” he added.

While Bumrah will step into the leadership role for this match, Pat Cummins also praised his Indian counterpart’s captaincy potential.
