England Hit by Injury Crisis Ahead of Nations League as Lee Carsley Considers Replacements for Saka and Rice

England’s Nations League campaign is under threat due to a mounting injury crisis. With manager Lee Carsley facing the prospect of multiple key withdrawals ahead of crucial fixtures.

Arsenal duo Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice both sustained injuries during Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Rice was substituted in the 71st minute, with Mikel Merino replacing him, while Saka limped off just nine minutes later. Gunners manager Mikel Arteta expressed concern, stating, “It doesn’t look good. For two players of that importance to tell you they cannot continue, it’s not good news. I don’t know if they’ll be fit for England, but if not, they won’t play.”

In addition to Saka and Rice, Chelsea forward Cole Palmer is also a doubt for England’s upcoming matches. Palmer, who had only just recovered from an injury, appeared to be limping after the Chelsea-Arsenal match and is now uncertain for Thursday’s Nations League clash with Greece or Sunday’s game against the Republic of Ireland at Wembley.

England
Manchester City defender Kyle Walker is another potential absentee due to a knee injury. While Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke also picked up a knock prior to joining the squad at St George’s Park. Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to miss the fixtures after suffering an injury during Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Aston Villa. Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp confirmed that Alexander-Arnold had felt something during the first half. And although the severity of the injury remains unclear, it is unlikely he will be available for England duty.

Adding to Carsley’s injury woes, Jack Grealish was not included in Manchester City’s squad for their recent match, making his availability for England even more uncertain. Grealish had been called up despite being sidelined with injury for the past three weeks, prompting a tense exchange between Carsley and City manager Pep Guardiola. Guardiola made it clear that Grealish was not fit, stating, “It’s a question for the England manager. He hasn’t trained for 17 days. Today was his first training session, and he trained for just 20 minutes.”

With several key players doubtful, Carsley has already indicated that he has replacements on standby and is likely to make adjustments to the squad before Monday’s departure for the international fixtures. England’s interim manager will be hoping that any potential injuries can be managed swiftly, as his squad prepares for a challenging double-header in the Nations League.
