Lille reportedly threatened Leny Yoro with a year on the sidelines if he didn’t sign for Manchester United.
The French club secured over £50 million from the teenage defender’s transfer to Old Trafford. With his contract winding down, Lille was eager to cash in, even though Leny Yoro preferred a move to Real Madrid.
Real Madrid, eyeing Leny Yoro as a free agent in 12 months, made a £30 million offer weeks ago, which Lille rejected, aiming for a higher value for their prized asset. To avoid losing him for nothing, Lille “threatened” to bench Leny Yoro for an entire season if he declined the move to the Premier League, according to Spanish outlet Marca.
Despite preferring a switch to Spain, Leny Yoro ultimately joined Manchester United, becoming their second summer signing after Joshua Zirkzee. United, looking to bolster their defense after a challenging season, were pleased to secure the promising defender.
Yoro expressed his excitement about joining Manchester United: “Signing for a club with the stature and ambition of Manchester United so early in my career is an incredible honour. Since my first conversations with the club, they set out a clear plan for how I can develop in Manchester as part of this exciting project, and showed a lot of care for me and my family.
“I know about the history of young players at Manchester United and feel it can be the perfect place to reach my potential and achieve my ambitions, together with my new team-mates.”
