Rohit: ‘We were prepared to be all out for a low score to secure a result’

Rohit Sharma emphasized that the Indian team was willing to risk getting bowled out for a low score in their first innings to secure a result against Bangladesh in the Kanpur Test. With two and a half days lost to rain, Rohit and his team decided to take aggressive measures on a pitch that offered little assistance to bowlers. Fortunately, the weather cleared up, allowing India to first dismiss Bangladesh for 233, taking the last seven wickets for just 121 runs.

In response, India declared at 285 for 9 in just 34.4 overs, aiming to put pressure on the opposition. “We had to think a lot about how to keep the game moving after losing two and a half days,” Rohit explained after India sealed a seven-wicket victory. He noted that the team prioritized overs bowled over runs scored, opting to accelerate their scoring rate. Rohit led from the front, smashing 23 runs off 11 balls, while Yashasvi Jaiswal made headlines by scoring fifties in both innings in under 50 balls.

Rohit acknowledged the bowlers’ efforts to make the match competitive despite the pitch conditions, stating, “It was a risk we were willing to take.” Player of the Series R Ashwin echoed this sentiment, highlighting Rohit’s eagerness to achieve a result, which was evident in his aggressive batting approach.

Additionally, Rohit praised Akash Deep for his impactful performances in the series. Deep’s ability to bowl long spells and maintain his pace was crucial, as he provided key breakthroughs against Bangladesh. Jasprit Bumrah also commended Deep’s dedication and heart, signaling a promising future for the young bowler as India prepares for more cricket ahead.
