Steven Croft, a veteran allrounder and key player in Lancashire’s 2011 Championship-winning team, has announced his retirement from professional cricket at the age of 39. His last appearance came earlier this month in a Vitality Blast quarter-final against Sussex, marking his 600th match for the club across all formats. Croft made his debut for Lancashire in 2005 and accumulated 19,183 runs and 199 wickets with his offspin over his career.

In 2011, he famously scored the winning runs against Somerset at Taunton, ending a 77-year wait for the County Championship. Four years later, he led the T20 team to its first T20 Blast title, defeating Northamptonshire in the final at Edgbaston. Notably, Croft played 148 consecutive T20 matches for Lancashire from June 2006 to July 2018, setting an English record. He finishes as the club’s leading T20 run-scorer with 5,486 runs.

Reflecting on his career, Croft stated, “My dream as a boy was to play one game for Lancashire, and in the end, it became 600. I have realized my dream and more.”

Mark Chilton, Lancashire’s Director of Cricket, praised Croft for his dedication and impact on the team, highlighting not only his outstanding contributions but also the influence he will continue to have in developing young talent in his new coaching role. Furthermore, Chilton emphasized the importance of Croft’s experience as a vital resource for the club moving forward.
