Dwayne Bravo has officially confirmed his retirement from all forms of cricket following an injury that cut short his final season in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). Dwayne Bravo retires from all cricket after an 18-year career, citing injury. He is the leading T20 wicket-taker. He had previously retired from international cricket in 2021 and stepped away from the Indian Premier League (IPL) last year to focus on coaching. In the past year, Bravo has worked with Chennai Super Kings and the Afghanistan men’s cricket team as part of his transition into coaching.
Physical Strain Ends a Legendary Career
Dwayne Bravo shared the news of his retirement on Instagram, stating, “My mind wants to keep going, but my body can no longer endure the pain, the breakdowns, and the strain.” He emphasized that he didn’t want to let down his teammates, fans, or teams by continuing to play in physical discomfort. “With a heavy heart, I officially announce my retirement from the sport. Today, the Champion bids farewell.”
A T20 Icon with Global Success
During an 18-year career, Dwayne Bravo became a T20 icon, winning titles in major leagues like the IPL, Pakistan Super League (PSL), and Big Bash League. He also claimed two T20 World Cup titles with the West Indies. With 631 wickets from 582 T20 appearances, Bravo is second only to fellow West Indian Kieron Pollard in matches played.
Final Season Cut Short by Injury
Bravo had announced before the CPL 2024 that it would be his final season. Dwayne Bravo had been set to play in the UAE’s ILT20 with MI Emirates but chose to retire after a groin injury against St Lucia Kings. His legacy in the CPL includes five titles, with three coming from his leadership of the Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR).
Mentoring the Next Generation
In addition to his playing achievements, Dwayne Bravo mentored young cricketers, notably Dominic Drakes and USA fast bowler Ali Khan, helping them flourish in both domestic and international T20 leagues.
