Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu has signed a three-season deal with Sydney Thunder for the upcoming Women’s Big Bash League 2024-25, starting October 27. Athapaththu, who played for Sydney Thunder last season as an undrafted player, made a significant impact by scoring 552 runs at an average of 42.46 and taking nine wickets, earning the Player-of-the-Tournament award and helping the team to a fourth-place finish.

Athapaththu expressed her excitement about the new contract, stating that it was an easy decision due to her belief in the club’s vision and her enjoyment of the Thunder environment. She highlighted her strong bond with her teammates and her appreciation for representing the diverse community of Western Sydney.

This signing marks a shift in the WBBL‘s contracting system, allowing teams to secure an overseas player for up to three years outside the draft, which is set for September 1. Sydney Thunder’s general manager, Trent Copeland, praised Athapaththu not only for her cricket skills but also for her positive impact on fans and teammates.

Athapaththu has previously played for Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers in the WBBL. Last season, she joined the Thunder as a replacement player and made a notable contribution. Sydney Thunder’s season preview will kick off against Hobart Hurricanes on October 28. The updated Thunder squad includes Athapaththu, Samantha Bates, Hannah Darlington, Saskia Horley, Anika Learoyd, Phoebe Litchfield, Claire Moore, Taneale Peschel, Georgia Voll, and Tahlia Wilson.
