The Indian men’s hockey team is set to face Spain in the bronze medal match at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The match will take place at the Yves-du-Manoir Stadium in Colombes on Thursday, with live streaming and telecast available in India. The match is scheduled to begin at 5:30 PM IST.
India, ranked fifth in the world, narrowly lost 3-2 to world No. 2 Germany in the semi-finals on Tuesday. Despite goals from skipper Harmanpreet Singh and Sukhjeet Singh, India fell short as Marco Miltkau scored a late winner for Germany, who will now compete for the gold against the Netherlands. This marks the second consecutive Olympics where India has reached the bronze medal match.
During the group stage, India finished second with three wins and a draw in five matches. In the quarter-finals, the team overcame Great Britain in a shootout, despite being down to 10 men in the opening 20 minutes. Harmanpreet Singh, with his goal in the semi-final, is now the tournament’s leading goal-scorer with eight goals.
Spain, ranked eighth, had a challenging semi-final against the Netherlands, losing 4-0. Prior to that, Spain defeated defending champions Belgium 3-2 in the quarter-finals and finished fourth in the group stage with two wins in five matches.
The head-to-head record since the Tokyo 2020 Olympics shows India winning five of the nine matches against Spain, though two of these victories came in shootouts. Earlier this year, in the FIH Pro League, India won one match 4-1 and another in a shootout against Spain.
