Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat will face USA’s Sarah Hildebrandt in the final of the women’s 50kg event at the Paris 2024 Olympics wrestling competition early on Thursday. The gold medal match will begin at around 12:30 AM IST on August 8 and can be watched live on streaming and telecast platforms.
Vinesh Phogat, unseeded in this competition, reached the final with three impressive wins. The 29-year-old defeated top seed and Tokyo 2020 champion Yui Susaki of Japan in the opening round. She then overcame former European champion Oksana Livach of Ukraine in the quarter-finals and reigning Pan American Games champion Yusneylis Guzman of Cuba in the semis.
Sarah Hildebrandt, seeded sixth, advanced to the final by beating Algeria’s Ibtissem Doudou in her opener via technical superiority. In the quarter-finals, she defeated Feng Ziqi of the People’s Republic of China 7-4, and then triumphed over Mongolia’s Dolgorjavyn Otgonjargal, a three-time World Championships medallist, 5-0 in the semis.
Vinesh Phogat is a three-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist and won gold at the 2018 Asian Games but missed the 2023 Asian Games due to injury. She is also a two-time World Championships bronze medallist, though her medals came in the 53kg category. Sarah Hildebrandt is the bronze medalist from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and a four-time World Championships medallist, three times in the 50kg category, and a former Pan American Games champion.
Vinesh Phogat is the first Indian woman to reach an Olympic wrestling final. India has won a total of seven Olympic medals in wrestling.
