Yves-du-Manoir Stadium was abuzz with excitement as the Netherlands, Spain, Germany, and India battled for a place in the men’s hockey gold medal match at the Paris 2024 Olympics on Tuesday, August 6.
In the first semi-final, the Netherlands delivered a commanding performance, defeating Spain 4-0. This victory earned them a coveted spot in Thursday’s gold-medal match. For Spain, the loss was a tough blow, but they still have a chance to claim a medal in the bronze match, also scheduled for Thursday.
The second semi-final was a nail-biter, with Germany narrowly edging out India 3-2 in a dramatic finish. India, who had not reached a hockey gold medal match since the Moscow 1980 Olympics, were eager to change history but fell just short.
Game of the Day: Germany vs. India
India’s captain, Harmanpreet Singh, gave his team an early lead with a penalty corner goal in the first period. However, Germany quickly turned the tide, converting two penalty corners and a penalty stroke, with Gonzalo Peillat and Christopher Rühr finding the net. Sukhjeet Singh’s equalizer for India set up a tense final period, but Germany’s Marco Miltkau scored the winning goal in the 54th minute.
“It just feels incredible,” said Miltkau. “Amazing crowd, but from both sides, India and Germany. First time playing Olympics, it’s an amazing feeling. And now, even better playing the final.”
Germany will now face the Netherlands for the gold medal on Thursday, August 8.

Players of the Day: 6 August
The Netherlands’ Jip Jannsen and Germany’s Rühr stood out with their crucial penalty strokes. Jannsen, reflecting on his performance, said, “I’m training a lot on penalty strokes, of course, because it can be a decisive moment in the game. I’m very happy to help the team out today and that they put me in a position to score.”
Dutch goalkeeper Pirmin Blaak also shone, making seven key saves against the Spanish offense. “I don’t think we created too many opportunities, to be honest, but we were just very effective today, and our goalie did a great job stopping some penalty corners to make sure that they couldn’t fight their way back into the game,” praised Dutch coach Jeroen Delmee.
For India, Singh’s successful penalty corner was a highlight, giving fans hope for a strong performance in the bronze-medal match against Spain.
