Tulika Maan, the 2019 South Asian Games champion and Commonwealth Games silver medallist from Birmingham 2022. Will be India’s sole representative in judo at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Competing in the women’s +78kg weight category, the 25-year-old judoka secured her spot through a continental quota based on her rankings. This will be Tulika’s first appearance at the Olympic Summer Games.
The judo competitions at Paris 2024 will be held at the Champ-de-Mars Arena from July 27 to August 3. The event features 14 weight classes, seven each for men and women, along with a mixed team competition. A total of 372 judokas from around the world will participate.
In the women’s +78kg category, the competition is fierce, with two-time world champion and Tokyo 2020 gold medallist Akira Sone of Japan defending her title. Other top contenders include Cuban legend Idalys Ortiz. The London 2012 champion and four-time Olympic medallist, and French star Romane Dicko, a bronze medallist from Tokyo 2020. Tulika Maan will face Idalys Ortiz in her opening bout on Friday.
India’s judo journey at the Olympics has yet to yield a medal, though Sushila Devi Likmabam represented the country in the women’s 48kg division at Tokyo 2020 but did not advance past the opening round. Tababi Thangjam Devi, however, won a silver at the 2018 Youth Olympics.
Judo made its Olympic debut at the Tokyo 1964 Olympics and, after a brief absence in Mexico City 1968, has been a regular feature since the Munich 1972 Games.
