Legendary Australian cricketer Steve Smith once again showcased his fielding prowess with a remarkable direct hit that ran out Shubham Ranjane during Washington Freedom’s MLC 2024 match against the Seattle Orcas. The pivotal moment occurred in the 14th over of the Orcas’ innings, when Ranjane was building a steady partnership with South African star Heinrich Klaasen.
Ian Holland, bowling from over the wicket, delivered a length ball around the off stump, which Ranjane softly nudged towards the off side. Positioned near the 30-yard circle, Smith displayed outstanding athleticism by swiftly picking up the ball and launching a precise throw to the non-striker’s end. Ranjane, attempting a risky single, was just short of the crease as Smith’s throw hit the stumps, resulting in his dismissal by the narrowest of margins.
Earlier in the game, Smith had been in fine batting form, having scored impressive unbeaten innings against MI New York and Texas Super Kings. However, in this match, Cameron Gannon dismissed him for 12 runs in the sixth over. Despite a brief batting collapse, Washington Freedom managed to chase down the 125-run target. A resilient sixth-wicket partnership between Obus Pienaar and Lahiru Milantha ensured their victory.
