In the latest developments in Indian cricket, KL Rahul is likely to lead India in the upcoming multi-format series against Sri Lanka 2024. Recent reports suggest that the BCCI is considering resting Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Jasprit Bumrah for the series, which starts on July 27.
According to Vipul Kashyap, a sports correspondent from ANI, KL Rahul will likely captain the Indian team in the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka in Rohit’s absence. Kashyap also noted that Hardik Pandya will probably be rested for this series but will lead the Men in Blue in T20Is afterward, following Rohit’s announcement of his retirement from T20Is.
“Hardik Pandya T20I captain will lead T20 after Rohit, he is likely not to be part of the next series, KL Rahul captain to lead the team in ODIs in the Sri Lanka series: BCCI updates @hardikpandya7 @klrahul,” tweeted Kashyap.
With Hardik expected to sit out the Sri Lankan series, it’s unclear who will captain the side in the shortest format. It is likely that Shubman Gill, who is leading the side against Zimbabwe, will take on the captaincy role there as well.
KL Rahul leadership has been a star performer for India in the fifty-over game. He last played an ODI on December 21, 2023, against South Africa.
This series will also mark Gautam Gambhir’s first assignment as India’s head coach.
