Manchester United are on the brink of adding Rene Hake to Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff as they gear up for the 2024/25 season.
The Red Devils ended a challenging season on a high by upsetting Manchester City in the FA Cup final. This success has led the club’s leadership to offer Ten Hag a new contract. After considering their options over recent weeks.
With Ten Hag set to agree to the new terms, the focus has shifted to enhancing his backroom team. Former United star Ruud van Nistelrooy is already poised for a role after turning down head coach position at Burnley. And now Hake is also in Ten Hag’s sights.
According to Dutch outlet Algemeen Dagblad. The Go Ahead Eagles head coach is available for a nominal fee, reportedly just ‘a few euros’. Hake has been at the helm of the Eredivisie club since 2022 and led them to their highest league finish in over 15 years last season, boosting his reputation. He was even considered potential replacement for Arne Slot at Feyenoord after Slot moved to Liverpool to succeed Jurgen Klopp.
Hake and Ten Hag share a history, having worked together at FC Twente in the academy before Ten Hag’s move to Bayern Munich. Hake is reportedly eager to join Ten Hag at Old Trafford despite currently being a head coach.
As negotiations over Ten Hag’s extended contract near completion, it is expected that both Hake and Van Nistelrooy will soon finalize their agreements to join Manchester United.
Ten Hag has previously mentioned that he and Hake have maintained contact since their time at Twente. In a 2023 interview with Dutch outlet Voetbal International, Ten Hag said. “After our common period at Twente, we have always kept in touch. We meet up and call each other. You talk about private matters, how things are going at home and with the children. But usually, it is about football. (At Twente) he was incredibly driven, ambitious, but also extremely convinced of himself. A trainer who worked very methodically.”
With Hake’s imminent arrival, Manchester United looks to strengthen their coaching team and build on the momentum gained under Ten Hag’s leadership.
