The creators of Top Gun: Maverick have scheduled a new Formula 1 film to hit theaters on June 25th next year.
The film, directed by Joseph Kosinski, known for Top Gun: Maverick and Tron Legacy, is a collaboration with the Formula 1 world championship. Lewis Hamilton, seven-times F1 world champion, serves as a co-producer and aims for the film to achieve a higher level of realism compared to previous motorsport dramatizations.
Although the film’s title has not been disclosed yet, it is being produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. The producer behind successful films including the recent Top Gun reboot, is leading the production.
Filming commenced last year at various circuits and during selected world championship events, starting with the British Grand Prix. Despite a brief disruption in the latter half of 2023 due to the Writers Guild of America strike, production has since resumed. This year, filming has continued, with upcoming shoots planned at events such as the British Grand Prix and others leading up to the season finale in Abu Dhabi at Yas Marina.
Apple Original Films, in partnership with Warner Bros Pictures, will distribute the film. Followed by its North American debut two days later. IMAX theaters will also showcase the film.
The cast features Brad Pitt, 60, portraying a former driver making a comeback to Formula 1 with the fictional APXGP team. Damson Idris plays his rookie teammate. Other notable actors in the ensemble include Javier Bardem, Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, Sarah Niles, Kim Bodnia, Samson Kayo, and Callie Cooke.
According to F1, the film promises to immerse audiences in the spectacle of the annual sports series, highlighting the drivers’ skill and heroism while capturing the intense competition of Formula 1.
