Assessing the Post-World Cup Trajectories of England’s Under-20 Heroes

As England gears up for the Euro 2024 campaign, the spotlight turns to the players who were part of the Under-20 World Cup-winning squad in 2017. While the victory was a significant achievement, only two members of that talented group have made it to the senior squad for the upcoming tournament in Germany.

Among the notable successes from that squad, Marc Guehi and Phil Foden, who previously triumphed in the Under-17 World Cup, are expected to feature prominently in the Euros opener against Serbia. Conor Gallagher could potentially make it a trio of starters from the 2017 Under-17 World Cup-winning team.

Meanwhile, the journey of other members of the Under-20 World Cup-winning squad has taken various paths. Some have earned senior caps for England, while others have experienced changes in their international allegiances.

Goalkeepers Freddie Woodman, Dean Henderson, and Luke Southwood have each navigated different trajectories, with Woodman finding regularity in the Championship, Henderson earning senior caps, and Southwood opting for Northern Ireland.

In defense, Ezri Konsa represents the only member of the Under-20 squad in the current Euros squad, showcasing his versatility at Aston Villa. Other defenders like Fikayo Tomori, Jake Clarke-Salter, Jonjoe Kenny, and Kyle Walker-Peters have encountered mixed fortunes in their club careers.

Midfielders Lewis Cook and Ainsley Maitland-Niles have earned senior caps, while others like Sheyi Ojo, Ovie Ejaria, Josh Onomah, and Kieran Dowell have pursued different paths after departing their respective clubs.

In the forward department, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Dominic Solanke, who both played pivotal roles in the Under-20 World Cup triumph, have scored Premier League goals but are not part of the Euros squad. Ademola Lookman, who has since represented Nigeria, has enjoyed success at Atalanta.

Adam Armstrong and Harry Chapman, the other forwards from the Under-20 squad, have showcased their talents in the lower divisions of English football.

As England embarks on their Euro 2024 journey, the diverse paths taken by the Under-20 World Cup winners highlight the unpredictable nature of football careers and the challenges of transitioning from youth success to senior international competition.
