Uganda’s men’s national cricket team made history on Monday night in Guyana with their first-ever World Cup appearance, facing Afghanistan in a landmark encounter. This match, held at the Providence Stadium, marked the first meeting between the two teams. Uganda commemorated the occasion by presenting Afghanistan with a special souvenir, creating a memorable moment for both sides.
Before the Group C clash in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, Uganda’s captain Brian Masaba handed a memento to Afghanistan’s skipper Rashid Khan on behalf of the Afghanistan Cricket Board. The gesture included a cap gifted to Rashid, celebrating Uganda’s milestone achievement. Uganda had qualified for this prestigious event by defeating Zimbabwe in a qualification tournament in November 2023.
Opting to bowl first after winning the toss, Uganda displayed commendable effort by restricting Afghanistan to 183/5, preventing them from reaching the 200-run mark. Despite this valiant effort, Afghanistan’s Fazalhaq Farooqi dominated Uganda’s batting lineup, dismantling their top order and putting Uganda on the brink of defeat.
The match not only showed Uganda’s first World Cup entry but also displayed their fair play and competitive nature, making a strong impression on the global cricket community.
