In a thrilling encounter in the Charlotte Edwards Cup, Northern Diamonds faced disappointment despite an outstanding performance from all-rounder Erin Burns, who claimed a career-best 5 for 25. Despite Burns’ heroics, The Blaze managed to defend their total of 136, securing their second consecutive victory in the tournament.
The Blaze’s innings saw Scotland skipper Kathryn Bryce leading the charge with 31 runs, supported by England Under-19 captain Josie Groves’ unbeaten 24. However, it was Blaze skipper Kirstie Gordon who shone with the ball, picking up 3 for 20 to restrict Diamonds’ chase, resulting in a narrow four-run victory for The Blaze.
Burns showcased her bowling prowess throughout the match, claiming wickets in each of her four overs, including two crucial breakthroughs in the powerplay. Alongside Burns, leg-spinner Katie Levick also impressed, contributing with figures of 3 for 22 to keep the pressure on The Blaze batsmen.
Despite a promising start to their chase, with Lauren Winfield-Hill and Hollie Armitage anchoring the innings, Diamonds couldn’t maintain the momentum. Even though Armitage and Winfield-Hill’s partnership of 49 provided hope, Blaze’s disciplined bowling attack, coupled with some crucial breakthroughs, prevented Diamonds from reaching their target.
In the end, Diamonds fell short of the required total, despite a valiant effort from Katherine Fraser, who managed to hit a six in the final over. With this loss, Diamonds faced disappointment, highlighting the fine margins in cricket where individual brilliance often isn’t enough to secure victory.
