Angelo Mathews Returns as Sri Lanka Announces T20 World Cup Squad

Sri Lanka has unveiled its 15-man squad for the upcoming Twenty20 World Cup, with experienced all-rounder Angelo Mathews making a notable inclusion. Alongside Mathews, uncapped bowler Dunith Wellalage has earned a spot in the squad, which will be led by .

Mathews, a veteran of the game who previously lifted the T20 World Cup trophy in 2014, will be making his sixth appearance in the prestigious tournament. His selection comes after a recent T20 comeback for Sri Lanka in January, marking a return after a three-year hiatus from the format.

Hasaranga, who missed several major tournaments due to injury, including last year’s Asia Cup and 50-overs World Cup, as well as the current Indian Premier League (IPL), has been named as the captain. All-rounder Charith Asalanka will serve as his deputy.

The squad also includes bowler Matheesha Pathirana, despite nursing a hamstring injury sustained while playing for the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.

Sri Lanka is set to depart for the World Cup on May 14 and will commence their campaign against South Africa in New York on June 3. They are placed in Group D alongside Bangladesh, Nepal, and Netherlands.
