Rajat Patidar, captain of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), has been fined INR 12 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate during their recent IPL 2025 win against Mumbai Indians (MI) at Wankhede Stadium on Monday. This marks RCB’s first over-rate offence of the season.
Despite the fine, Patidar has been making headlines for positive reasons too. In his debut season as RCB captain, he has led from the front with the bat, scoring 161 runs in four matches — second only to Virat Kohli, who has 164 runs from as many games. Patidar’s aggressive approach and calm presence under pressure have drawn praise from analysts and fans alike.
After RCB’s win over MI, former cricketer Ambati Rayudu lauded Patidar’s tactical awareness, especially his decision to bring back the experienced Bhuvneshwar Kumar during a crucial phase of the chase. Rayudu described it as “a brilliant move” while speaking on ESPNcricinfo’s TimeOut show.
Former RCB coach Sanjay Bangar also praised Patidar’s use of bowlers, specifically holding Krunal Pandya back for the final over rather than using him in the 19th, when Josh Hazlewood had limited runs to defend. Rayudu also noted Patidar’s composure in high-pressure moments, pointing out that even Virat Kohli seemed more relaxed, rarely stepping in with advice.
RCB have won three out of six games this season and will face Delhi Capitals (DC) next at home in Bengaluru on Thursday evening.
Before Patidar, other captains fined for slow over-rates this season include Hardik Pandya (MI), Riyan Parag (RR), and Rishabh Pant (LSG).
