As anticipation builds for the upcoming T20 World Cup matches in the USA, Venu Pisike, chairman of USA Cricket. Sees the tournament as a crucial opportunity to raise cricket awareness in the country. While expatriates have primarily embraced cricket, Pisike believes that the allure of participating in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will significantly attract local Americans to the sport.
Hosting the event alongside the West Indies, the USA will make its World Cup debut. With the national team set to face Canada in the tournament opener on June 1. Comprising mainly semi-professional cricketers of South Asian heritage, the team also includes former New Zealand star Corey Anderson. Former Indian first-class cricketer Milind Kumar, and former India U-19 player Harmeet Singh.
Speaking to PTI, Pisike acknowledged the challenge of expanding cricket’s reach in the USA beyond expat communities. However, he expressed optimism that the World Cup’s marketing efforts would create momentum and provide opportunities for the sport’s growth, particularly with the prospect of cricket’s inclusion in the Olympics.
Highlighting New York’s readiness to host matches, Pisike mentioned the construction of a 34.000-capacity makeshift stadium in Eisenhower Park. Where India and Pakistan will clash on June 9. Additionally, India is scheduled to play Ireland and the USA at this venue, featuring drop-in pitches imported from Australia.
Despite not training in India ahead of the World Cup, Pisike expressed interest in seeking the BCCI’s assistance for training and exposure opportunities for USA players post-event, emphasizing past collaborations with Indian cricket associations.
Acknowledging past governance issues, Pisike assured that the current administration is compliant with ICC standards. Paving the way for potential collaborations and partnerships with cricket associations for future development initiatives.
