Expressing disappointment after a narrow defeat against the Delhi Capitals (DC) in their recent IPL 2024 encounter at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubman Gill highlighted the importance of precise execution, especially when chasing on smaller grounds.

The high-octane Match 40 of IPL 2024 saw DC emerge victorious over GT in a thrilling finish. Despite valiant efforts from batsmen Sai Sudharsan, David Miller, and all-rounder Rashid Khan who tried to prevent a double-digit defeat for GT, they fell short by just four runs.
Rishabh Pant’s swashbuckling knock of 88 runs off just 43 deliveries heavily influenced the match, with Axar Patel’s belligerent 66 off 43 balls and Tristan Stubbs’s quickfire cameo of 26 off 7 balls providing strong support. This collective batting effort propelled DC’s total past the crucial 200-run mark, proving just enough to secure the vital two points.
In a post-match analysis, Gill acknowledged his team’s shortcomings and pinpointed the areas where GT faltered.
“We were confident of restricting them to around 200-210 at one stage, but unfortunately, we leaked some crucial runs in the final 2-3 overs. The Arun Jaitley Stadium is a relatively small ground, and we discussed the importance of tight bowling during our chase. Executing our plans flawlessly becomes even more critical against established batters and finishers in such situations. Whether it’s executing pinpoint yorkers or deploying variations effectively, precise execution is paramount,” remarked Shubman Gill.
Though GT managed a commendable run rate of 14.6 in the final five overs, it wasn’t enough to chase down the daunting target set by DC. This outcome highlights the significance of a strong finish with the bat, a strategy that ultimately paid off for the Delhi Capitals.
