Australian national coach Andrew McDonald remains optimistic about Mitchell Marsh’s availability for the upcoming T20 World Cup, despite the all-rounder’s slower-than-expected recovery from a hamstring injury.

Marsh, who recently suffered the injury during his stint with the Delhi Capitals in the IPL, has been undergoing rehabilitation. While his progress has been slightly behind schedule, McDonald expressed confidence in Marsh’s ability to be fully fit for the tournament.

“Although his recovery has been slower than anticipated, we still have ample time before the World Cup begins,” McDonald stated. He also confirmed Marsh’s presence at Australia’s training camp in Brisbane, where the 32-year-old was seen batting in the nets.

McDonald dismissed any concerns regarding Marsh’s participation in the early stages of the tournament. Stating that the team is confident he will be ready for the opening game against Oman on June 6. However, he acknowledged the need to manage Marsh carefully, especially during the later stages of the competition.

Regarding security concerns surrounding the tournament. McDonald assured that the team trusts the ICC and the local authorities to ensure their safety. He mentioned that the team would be briefed on security measures and advised accordingly.

In terms of squad selection, McDonald acknowledged the difficulty in finalizing the 15-member squad, which led to the omission of several talented players like Steve Smith, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Matt Short, and Xavier Bartlett. He emphasized the need for balance in the squad to accommodate various playing styles.

“We believe that the selected squad provides us with versatility and the ability to adapt to different game situations,” McDonald commented on the selection process.

Overall, McDonald remains confident in Marsh’s recovery and the squad’s readiness for the T20 World Cup. Expressing optimism about Australia’s prospects in the upcoming tournament.
