Pakistan Selectors Drop Usama Mir, Recall Haris Rauf for England and Ireland T20 Series

In recent announcement, Pakistani selectors have opted to exclude leg-spinner Usama Mir from the T20 series against Ireland and England. While reinstating fast bowler Haris Rauf into the squad.

During a media conference, selectors Muhammad Yousuf, Abdul Razzaq, and Wahab Riaz indicated that the composition of. Pakistan’s World Cup squad would be influenced by the performances in the upcoming matches against Ireland and England.

The series against Ireland, comprising three matches, commences on May 10, followed by four games in England starting from May 22.

Addressing concerns about player fitness, Wahab expressed confidence that Mohammad Rizwan, Haris Rauf, Azam Khan. And Irfan Khan Niazi were making significant progress in their fitness and are expected to participate in the upcoming matches.

Wahab defended the decision to recall Hasan Ali, stating that Hasan would serve as a backup for Haris Rauf, with the latter being the preferred choice if fit and in form.

Haris Rauf had been sidelined due to fitness issues since the early stages of the Pakistan Super League. With his last appearance dating back to February.

Razzaq clarified that Usama Mir’s exclusion was due to the presence of Shadab Khan and Abrar Ahmed in the squad, making Mir surplus to requirements.

Reflecting on the recent T20 series against New Zealand, Yousuf acknowledged that while New Zealand was missing key players. Pakistan’s implementation of the rotation policy provided an opportunity to trial new players.

Yousuf emphasized the need for players to embrace innovative stroke play, suggesting that failure acceptance was crucial for growth in this aspect.

Wahab highlighted discussions with new head coach Gary Kirsten, aiming to cultivate an environment. Where players can perform fearlessly without the burden of insecurity or fear of failure.

The selectors affirmed their support for Babar Azam’s captaincy, acknowledging improvements seen during the New Zealand series and expressing optimism for his continued development.

The final squad includes: Babar Azam (Captain), Muhammad Rizwan, Azam Khan, Saim Ayub, Fakhar Zaman, Iftikhar Ahmed, Irfan Khan Niazi. Abrar Ahmed, Hasan Ali, Haris Rauf, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Muhammad Amir. Imad Wasim, Naseem Shah, Shadab Khan, Usman Khan, Abbas Afridi, and Agha Ali Salman.
