Despite a challenging performance in Saturday’s sprint race at the Chinese Grand Prix, McLaren experienced a significant turnaround in race pace on Sunday, leaving team officials pleasantly surprised.
Lando Norris, who started the sprint race from pole position, encountered a setback at the start and fell to seventh place. However, on Sunday, he showcased impressive pace, finishing second behind one of the Red Bulls. This unexpected improvement in competitiveness puzzled the McLaren team.
Team boss Stella noted that the sprint race results were in line with their pre-race expectations, but the cooler track conditions on Sunday may have favored McLaren’s performance. Stella highlighted that McLaren’s car tends to lose performance when pushing for multiple laps, but the colder conditions helped manage rear tire temperatures, allowing them to utilize the car’s strengths.
Oscar Piastri, despite finishing eighth after sustaining damage in a safety car incident, demonstrated resilience in adapting to the compromised handling of his car due to diffuser damage. Stella praised Piastri’s ability to adjust his driving style and maintain his position against strong competition.
