The Rajasthan Royals secured a thrilling victory against the Kolkata Knight Riders in a high-scoring encounter, the 31st match of the ongoing IPL season at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Despite KKR posting a daunting target of 223 runs, the Royals chased it down convincingly, thanks to a magnificent century by Jos Buttler, who remained unbeaten on a spectacular 107 runs off just 60 balls.
Captain’s Disappointment: Shreyas Iyer Addresses Media

Following the narrow defeat, Kolkata Knight Riders’ captain Shreyas Iyer addressed the media, expressing his disappointment at the outcome. He described the loss as a “bitter pill to swallow,” acknowledging the emotional rollercoaster his team endured throughout the match. Iyer, however, emphasized the importance of moving on from the setback and focusing on their upcoming fixtures.
“It’s a bitter pill to swallow, emotions were a real roller-coaster today. Honestly, I didn’t anticipate this situation arising. Cricket can be a funny game sometimes,” admitted Iyer. He specifically mentioned Rovman Powell, who was batting well for KKR before his dismissal. Iyer acknowledged the difficulty in explaining the sudden turn of events but stressed the need for his team to accept the defeat gracefully and move forward with a positive mindset.
“At the end of the day, you have to ensure you bowl your best deliveries and put pressure on the batsmen,” Iyer stated.
Commendation for Sunil Narine’s Performance
Despite the loss, Iyer commended his teammate, Sunil Narine, for his exceptional performance with both bat and ball. He hailed Narine as a significant asset to the team, consistently making valuable contributions whenever he comes out to bat.
“We need to introspect and come back stronger. Narine is a great asset to the team, and he’s been showing it in every game when he comes out to bat. That kind of character is invaluable, and I’m glad he’s part of our team,” remarked Iyer.
Regarding his decision to bowl Varun Chakaravarthy in the final over, Iyer explained his reasoning. With Buttler clean-hitting the ball with ease, Iyer opted for a change of pace in an attempt to disrupt the batsman’s rhythm. While the strategy didn’t yield the desired outcome, Iyer highlighted the importance of learning from their mistakes and bouncing back stronger in the remaining matches.
Iyer concluded by stating, “It’s all about relaxing, rejuvenating as a team. We had a tough game, and within the next 2-3 days, it’s important that we learn from our mistakes and bounce back strong.” KKR will be looking to regroup and turn their fortunes around in the upcoming matches of the IPL 2024 season.
