Umesh Yadav removes Shreyas Iyer for 7 runs in the Ranji Trophy final

Shreyas Iyer’s struggles persisted in the Ranji Trophy final between Mumbai and Vidarbha, as he fell for just 7 runs on Day 1 at the Wankhede Stadium.

Facing Vidarbha’s attack after they chose to bowl first, Mumbai’s top-order started well, with Bhupen Lalwani and Prithvi Shaw adding 81 runs. However, Mumbai suffered a collapse, losing six wickets for just 30 runs.

Coming in at No. 5, Shreyas Iyer faced a tough challenge from Umesh Yadav’s short deliveries. Despite a promising start, he succumbed to the pressure, edging a delivery to slip after scoring 7 runs off 15 balls.

This disappointment adds to Shreyas’ recent struggles, having managed only 3 runs in the semifinal against Tamil Nadu. His form has been under scrutiny, especially after being dropped from the Indian team during the Test series against England.

Furthermore, controversy erupted around Shreyas when he skipped the Ranji Trophy quarterfinals due to health reasons but later practiced at the KKR Academy, drawing criticism from BCCI selector Ajit Agarkar.

Although Shreyas missed out on a BCCI central contract, coach Rahul Dravid hinted at opportunities for players like him, especially after India’s series win against England.

As the Ranji Trophy final progresses, Shreyas will look to make amends before gearing up for the upcoming IPL 2024 season.
