Ireland Dominates Day 1 of Test Against Afghanistan with Career-Best Fifer by Adair

On the opening day of the one-off Test between Ireland and Afghanistan, all-rounder Mark Adair’s impressive five-wicket haul tilted the scales in Ireland’s favor. Despite Afghan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi’s decision to bat first, Adair’s stellar performance restricted Afghanistan to 155 all out. Ireland’s dominance was further highlighted by the late wickets of Curtis Campher and night-watchman Theo van Woerkom, leaving them in a strong position.

However, Afghanistan fought back towards the end of the day, with spinner Zia-ur-Rehman spearheading a late resurgence. Despite this, Ireland remained in control, ending the day just 55 runs short of Afghanistan’s total with four wickets down. Adair’s early breakthroughs, including the dismissal of opener Noor Ali Zadran, set the tone for Ireland’s bowling display.

While Afghanistan struggled to find fluency in their innings, Ireland faced early setbacks in their reply. Yet, the partnership between Campher and Harry Tector revived their innings. Heading into day two, Tector remains unbeaten on 32 alongside Paul Stirling, as Ireland seeks to capitalize on their promising position. Despite their recent winless streak, Ireland aims to secure a victory against Afghanistan, who have claimed three Test wins since gaining Test status in 2017.
