Naomi Osaka Embraces ‘Learning Year’ After Second-Round Exit at US Open 2024

Naomi Osaka described 2024 as a “learning year” following her second-round exit from the US Open, marking another early Grand Slam departure in a season of challenges. The former world No. 1, who is returning to competitive tennis after a maternity break, has had a year of significant adjustment and self-discovery.

Osaka, who has claimed four Grand Slam titles, has struggled to find her rhythm this year, with the second round at Flushing Meadows, Wimbledon, and Roland Garros being her furthest progress. She faced a first-round exit at the Australian Open earlier in the season.

On Thursday, Osaka was defeated by Karolina Muchova with scores of 6-3, 7-6(5), unable to counter Muchova’s effective serve-and-volley game.

“It’s a little rough because I take these losses very personally. It might sound dramatic, but it feels like my heart dies every time I lose,” Osaka admitted. “I’m trying to handle these setbacks with more maturity and talk about them openly.”

A vocal advocate for mental health in sports, Osaka has previously shared her struggles with the pressures of competition. In 2021, she revealed that her victories brought her more relief than joy. This year, despite her challenges, she has been working on maintaining a positive outlook while managing the frequent disappointments.

Osaka has noted her improved physical condition since her return to the tour in January, following a 15-month hiatus. However, her results have been mixed, as reflected in her early exits from various tournaments.

“It’s been tough because I gauge my performance largely through results. I feel faster and better physically, yet I’m still facing early losses,” she said. “Playing in so many tournaments has been a commitment, but it’s also been enjoyable. I’ve had the chance to visit cities I’ve never been to before.”

Despite a second-round exit in Cincinnati and other early-round setbacks, Osaka showcased her potential with a strong first-round performance in New York, defeating 10th seed Jelena Ostapenko in straight sets.

“This year has been about learning for me,” Osaka reflected. “I’ve invested a lot of energy into every tournament I’ve played. The US Open holds a special place in my heart, and I’ve been giving it my all.”

As Osaka continues to navigate her return to competitive tennis, she remains focused on growth and learning from each experience.
